Gingrich Foundation Recognizes The Mount Vernon Ladies' Association (Thu, 02 Feb 2012)
Callista and Newt Gingrich WASHINGTON, D.C., Feb. 2, 2012 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- The Gingrich Foundation has recognized the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association as its February Charity of the Month. The Mount Vernon Ladies' Association cares for one of our country's most important historic sites - the home and estate of our first president, George Washington.

Founded in 1853 by Ann Pamela Cunningham, the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association is the oldest national historic preservation organization in the United States. Under Ms. Cunningham's leadership, the Association sought to raise $200,000 in a national appeal to save Washington's home. Five years later, the Association purchased Mount Vernon from Washington's great-grandnephew and began to restore it. In 1860, the Association finally opened the estate to the public, and it has remained open as a monument to President Washington ever since.

Today, approximately one million people visit Mount Vernon each year. The mansion, now restored with many of its original furnishings, is open for tours. Guests are free to roam the gardens and grounds, where a variety of original buildings still stand. At the pioneer farm site, as well as at the working blacksmith shop, distillery, and gristmill, visitors to Mount Vernon can get a better sense of Washington's life as a farmer by seeing important components of his estate operating much as they were when Washington died in 1799. On a hillside overlooking the Potomac, President Washington is buried with his wife Martha and several other family members.

"We appreciate very much that the Gingrich Foundation has set an example for others to follow," said James C. Rees, president of the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association. "Because we don't receive any government support, we depend upon the generosity of a wide range of patriotic Americans."

"The Mount Vernon Ladies' Association has preserved one of America's historical treasures for more than 150 years," said Callista Gingrich, president of the Gingrich Foundation. "The Association's work has helped generations of Americans better understand the Father of Our Country."

The Mount Vernon Ladies Association cares for President Washington's home and estate without the use of public funds.

The Gingrich Foundation is a domestic non-profit corporation founded by Callista and Newt Gingrich to support charitable purposes.

Racetrack Kitties: Teen Jockey Races to Save Cats' Lives (Thu, 02 Feb 2012)
horse-racing LOS ANGELES, Calif., Feb. 2, 2012 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- Eswan Flores wanted to give back to the non-profit organization, FixNation, that worked to control the cat population at the Los Alamitos Race Course where he began his horse-racing career so he decided to sponsor them.

FixNation is a non-profit organization that offers free spaying and neutering of stray and feral cats in the greater Los Angeles area.

"They've been very helpful in controlling the cat population at the Los Alamitos Race Course and people will soon see their logo on my pants," says Flores. "What a great way to combine my compassion for cats and horse racing."

It was reported that several hundred homeless cats and kittens were living at the racetrack. To date, approximately 100 have been spayed and neutered.

Training was provided to teach Flores and his manager how to humanely and safely trap the cats. Their compassion was clearly embraced by other racetrack employees who also care for the cats.

"FixNation has made horse racing history while bringing smiles to our faces, specifically by having our logo worn by jockey Flores," says Karn Myers, clinic director/founder/COO of FixNation, Inc. "I simply cannot thank Flores enough for being so supportive of our organization and raising public awareness."

Elizabeth Cava, a trapping trainer at FixNation, adds that, "It was so reassuring to see that they sought out a humane solution - a life-based solution - rather than the only other alternative - trap and kill."

About Eswan Flores:
Flores is an 18-year old high school senior and a native of Mexico. He started going to the track in Santa Anita when he was eight while his father worked as a groom. At 10, he would ride his bike to the Arcadia track, studying horses. Friends and family took him to ride at ranches. He is quickly making a name for himself in thoroughbred horse racing at one of the most premier tracks in the country. He has been interviewed by multiple entities including: the Los Angeles Times; PBS and Fox News.

For more information, visit: www.eswanflores.com .

About FixNation:
FixNation, Inc., a non-profit corporation, has a mission to reduce the population of homeless cats by sterilizing as many as possible. In addition, by consistently demonstrating the effectiveness of Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR), it seeks to bring about changes in public policy so that TNR becomes the officially sanctioned and government-funded approach to homeless cat management. It supports and promotes all humane initiatives and education to bring about the day of "No More Homeless Cats in L.A."

Global Superpower Colonizes Island Nation In Gilbert and Sullivan's Utopia Limited (Tue, 24 Jan 2012)
musical theater new york NEW YORK, N.Y., Jan. 24, 2012 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- What happens when a global superpower imposes its social conventions and political practices on a smaller, less "civilized" nation? "Utopia Limited," Gilbert & Sullivan's shockingly relevant satire of imperialism and globalization, tackles this question in a fresh new edition by the Blue Hill Troupe (www.bht.org), April 20-28, 2012 at El Teatro of El Museo del Barrio (1230 Fifth Avenue at 104th Street).

Before there was Arab Spring and Occupy Wall Street, there was Utopia Limited. Although it was written over a century ago, the work features scathing political satire and demonstrates a level of resonance with current events, world finance, and global politics that is positively eerie.

Well-meaning but hapless ruler controlled by conniving, self-interested cronies? Check. Vibrant, politically aware princess with progressive ideas? Check. Smooth-talking policy wonks selling their lies with song and dance? A reactionary movement that's just a few ideas short of an uprising? Check and check! Of course, there are also romantic entanglements, glorious music, sumptuous costumes, lavish sets, and un-miked singers over a full orchestra.

Tickets to Utopia Limited range in price from $28 to $100 and are available online at www.bht.org or by calling 866-811-4111. Payment in excess of $20 per ticket is tax-deductible to the extent provided by law.

The Blue Hill Troupe is New York City's only musical theater group to donate its net proceeds to charity. Proceeds from Utopia Limited will benefit "I Have A Dream" Foundation(R) - New York Metro Area http://www.ihaveadreamfoundation-ny.org .

In addition to ticket sales, the Blue Hill Troupe raises money for its charities through paid advertising in the 200-page glossy show program. For more information, visit http://bht.org/advertise.php .

For over thirty years, IHDF-NY has been sponsoring entire grade levels of students in under-resourced public schools and housing developments, and working with these "Dreamers" from early elementary school all the way through college. Upon high school graduation, each Dreamer receives guaranteed tuition assistance for higher education. By helping Dreamers gain access to college, IHDF-NY is putting them on different academic and life trajectories, while having a broader impact on the students' families and the generations that follow.

The Blue Hill Troupe is currently accepting proposals for its charity partner for the 2012-2013 season. Visit http://bht.org/charityselect.php for further information.

Utopia Limited is directed by Gary Slavin, whose recent Off Broadway credits include Show Choir! - The Musical and the hit political revue Bush Is Bad. Musical direction is by Zachary Schwartzman, an associate conductor with New York City Opera and Glimmerglass Opera.

Since 1924, the Blue Hill Troupe has produced a large-scale Gilbert & Sullivan operetta every spring, with lavish production values and full orchestra. Each year, the net proceeds benefit a different New York City charity, with the impressive total donated topping $3.5 million. Prior charities include The Carter Burden Center for the Aging (2011), The New York Foundling (2010), Inwood House (2009), and Covenant House New York (2008).

The all-volunteer Blue Hill Troupe has been featured on CBS Sunday Morning and with The New York Pops at Carnegie Hall. For fifteen years, they presented a concert in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Concerts and Lectures series, and they continue to concertize in venues around the city.

In its 88-year history, the Blue Hill Troupe has produced the entire Gilbert & Sullivan canon, including Thespis, the pair's first collaboration, to which Sullivan's score has been lost. In June 2008, the Blue Hill Troupe presented a concert version of Thespis, with a new score by Grammy Award-winning composer and record producer Thomas Z. Shepard. In 2005, the Blue Hill Troupe was honored with three awards at the 12th Annual International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival in Buxton, UK, for its innovative production of the G&S rarity, The Grand Duke.

The Blue Hill Troupe accepts applications for membership each fall. For more information, visit http://bht.org/join.php .

Association of American University Presses Celebrates 75 years of Cooperation and Service (Wed, 18 Jan 2012)
scholarly publishing NEW YORK, N.Y., Jan. 18, 2012 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- The Association of American University Presses (AAUP) celebrates the 75th anniversary of its founding in 1937. AAUP is an organization grounded in a tradition of service, whose members engage in forward-looking publishing programs and innovations. Both the history of the association and the future of scholarly communications will provide focus for a series of events, including a "University Press Week" in November 2012, to mark the occasion of the AAUP 75th anniversary.

AAUP President MaryKatherine Callaway (Director, Louisiana State University Press) states: "Over the past 75 years, the AAUP has promoted collaboration among its member presses and worked to help them explain the significant role university presses play. Not only do we contribute to the academic process, but many presses also examine and explain the culture and history of their region, and all AAUP members publish books that educate, inform, and enlighten. The organization also continues to assist its presses to make sense of an increasingly complex publishing landscape, providing a forum for the exchange of ideas, information, and expertise."

What is the Association of American University Presses?

AAUP can be defined by both its members and its mission. In 1937, a dozen or so university presses, representing institutions across North America, appointed officers to a new association, formalizing the ad hoc conversations between scholarly publishers that had been taking place since the 1920s. Today, AAUP represents 134 nonprofit scholarly publishers from 10 countries. While most AAUP members are presses sponsored by or based at universities, a significant number are independent publishers, or the publishing arms of societies, museums, and think tanks, that share the mission and standards of AAUP.

AAUP members publish books, journals, and new forms of scholarly work across all fields of inquiry from the humanities and social sciences to mathematics, medicine, and technology, and often support emerging and interdisciplinary scholarship. AAUP presses range greatly in size, from those publishing 2-5 new titles each year, to those who produce in excess of 2000. Each press shares a commitment to serve society, the academy, and their community through disseminating works of scholarship, art, and thought.

AAUP's mission is to assist its members through professional education, cooperative services, and public advocacy. "Our mission has remained consistent over the past 75 years," says AAUP Executive Director Peter Givler, "although what the association does to support that mission evolves along with publishing trends, new technologies, and the shifting landscape of scholarly communications."

Throughout 2012, AAUP will dive into its archives to refresh institutional memory, through online features and articles about the milestones and important programs that have shaped the association. Today, January 18, marks the date in 1928 when 12 university presses met and decided on the first cooperative project of the ad hoc group, a combined catalog of university press books titled "Shelfward Ho!" Every thoughtful publisher and scholar knows, however, that while an understanding of the past is vital, it is the work of today and tomorrow that holds the most importance for the next 75 years of nonprofit scholarly publishing.

"Progress and a cohesive spirit" was the how Publishers Weekly characterized AAUP in 1967, and this can serve as a motto still today. At the 2012 AAUP Annual Meeting in Chicago (June 18-20) and during the inaugural "University Press Week" (November 11-17), the association, its members, and its wider community will engage the present and future of AAUP and scholarly communications.

Gingrich Foundation Recognizes the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation (Fri, 13 Jan 2012)
Callista Gingrich WASHINGTON, D.C., Jan. 13, 2012 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- The Gingrich Foundation has recognized the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, Inc. as its January Charity of the Month. The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation cares for two of America's most iconic historical sites - Lady Liberty and Ellis Island.

In 1982, both the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island were in need of significant restoration when President Ronald Reagan asked Lee Iacocca, Chairman of the Chrysler Corporation, to lead a fundraising effort dedicated to their preservation.

For three decades, the Foundation has worked together with the National Park Service to restore the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Renovations to the Statue of Liberty have included rebuilding its interior structural support as well as the installation of a Statue of Liberty Museum in the statue's base. At Ellis Island, the Foundation created the Ellis Island Immigration Museum as well as theaters, libraries, exhibits, and an oral history recording studio. The museum has helped educate more than 40 million visitors since it opened in 1990, and its American Family Immigration History Center allows online visitors to search archives of passenger records and ships' manifests.

"You can't know who you are unless you know where you came from," said Stephen A. Briganti, Foundation President. "At ellisisland.org, we help you begin your journey of discovery into your past."

"The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island are at the heart of what it means to be an American," said Callista Gingrich, President of the Gingrich Foundation. "The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation has been working for 30 years to save important pieces of our history for future generations."

To date, the Foundation has raised over $600 million. Its support continues to come from the private sector and from the generosity of individual Americans.

The Gingrich Foundation is a domestic non-profit corporation founded by Callista and Newt Gingrich to support charitable purposes.

Gingrich Foundation Recognizes Toys for Tots (Fri, 09 Dec 2011)
Toys for Tots WASHINGTON, D.C., Dec. 9, 2011 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- The Gingrich Foundation is proud to honor the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation as its December Charity of the Month. Toys for Tots distributes millions of gifts each Christmas to brighten the holidays of our nation's less fortunate children.

Colonel William L. Hendricks, USMCR, founded Toys for Tots as a pilot program in 1947. The Marine Corps expanded his project just one year later into a national effort and called upon Marine Corps Reserve units to conduct Toys for Tots campaigns in their local communities.

Six decades later, Toys for Tots continues to thrive. Today, the program reaches all 50 states, and invites communities without a reserve unit to conduct approved Toys for Tots campaigns.

"We are very pleased the Gingrich Foundation has decided to name the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation as their Charity for the Month of December," said retired Marine Major Bill Grein, Vice President of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation. "With this additional exposure we will reach many civic-minded people who share our interest in helping fulfill the Christmas holiday dreams of our nation's neediest children; children who might otherwise be overlooked this year."

"Toys for Tots is a wonderful American tradition," said Callista Gingrich, President of the Gingrich Foundation. "Newt and I are honored to support an organization that helps raise the spirits and hopes of those in need at Christmas."

To date, Toys for Tots has distributed more than 450 million toys to more than 200 million children -- an extraordinary accomplishment.

The Gingrich Foundation is a domestic non-profit corporation founded by Callista and Newt Gingrich to support charitable purposes.

Citizenship in a Sound Bite Era (Mon, 05 Dec 2011)
Minnesota Humanities Center ST. PAUL, Minn., Dec. 5, 2011 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- On December 6, 2011, global education non-profit World Savvy, the Institute for Global Citizenship at Macalester College, and the Minnesota Humanities Center are sponsoring "Citizenship in a Sound Bite Era," a community forum among a range of individuals and organizations around Minnesota working to educate and engage young people for informed, responsible and sustained citizenship in the sound bite era.

For more information about the event, visit www.worldsavvy.org/events .

In an age where the half life of information is shrinking daily and where news is produced more to entertain than to inform, engaging citizens in sustained dialogue and action is more challenging than ever. While it's easier than ever before to take simple actions - to "like" a cause or forward an e-mail-are we preparing the next generation of citizens to really explore and think critically about issues, and embrace the complexity of the range of issues that challenge society? Or are we becoming a Sound Bite society and citizenry? On Tuesday December 6th, stakeholders from across the business, non-profit and government sectors will come together at Macalester College to share their thoughts and perspectives on this and other questions related to building an informed, engaged citizenry in the 21st century.

Panelists include Mark Ritchie, Minnesota Secretary of State, Brian Rosenberg, President of Macalester College, Dana Mortenson, Executive Director of World Savvy, Jamal Thompson, Director of Education at the National Black MBA Association of the Twin Cities, and Trista Harris, Executive Director of the Headwaters Foundation for Justice.

Speakers will explore what citizenship looks like in a world where communities can no longer be defined strictly by geographic borders. They will share their thoughts on what knowledge and skills are required for citizenship in an era dominated by sound bites, social media and issues that cross borders of all forms. The audience will then have a chance to participate in the dialogue and share their own thoughts and perspectives on this critical issue.

The upcoming generation of stakeholders and leaders has unprecedented opportunity to both produce and consume information and media, and how we define engagement - in our democracy, in society, locally and globally - is evolving every day. This forum will explore what is working and what needs to change to ensure that the next generation of leaders and changemakers are prepared to address the challenges of the 21st century.

About World Savvy:
World Savvy is a global education non-profit working to educate and engage youth in community and world affairs. Through youth engagement programs and professional development for educators, World Savvy is working to close the global competency gap in K-12 education to ensure that every student graduates with the knowledge, skills and dispositions for responsible citizenship in the 21'st century. Since founding in 2002, World Savvy has reached more than 160,000 youth and 1,900 educators from offices in San Francisco, Minneapolis and New York, as well as through online programs and services.

Adopt an Olive Tree and Help to Alleviate World Hunger and Strengthen Communities (Mon, 05 Dec 2011)
extra virgin olive oil EAST LONGMEADOW, Mass., Dec. 5, 2011 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- In the spirit of the holidays, Tre Olive is donating $5.00 for each olive tree adoption order it receives from December 1 through December 25 to the Fruit Tree Planting Foundation (FTPF). The donations will be used to support FTPF's work to plant fruit trees in low-income communities around the world.

"It's just a natural thing for us to do," says Joe Maruca, president and founder of Tre Olive. "The programs at the Fruit Tree Planting Foundation are at the forefront of a global movement towards sustainability. And, we at Tre Olive have a strong foundation in this same philosophy. Our goal is to avoid selling our olive oil to the large companies who often dilute it with lesser-quality oils from around the world."

So, why not consider giving someone a unique holiday gift - an olive tree - this holiday season? The cost is $110 for a one-year adoption. In return, Tre Olive will send the gift recipient three liters of some of the purest, most delicious olive oil produced in Italy. The gift package will also include: an adoption certificate; certificate/photo holder; welcome letter; brochure; and more.
