Gate Swings Back! (Tue, 08 Jul 2008)
1. Sonic Society Theme and Intro 2. Introduction With Jack Ward and Shannon Hilchie: Hi All! Welcome back to the Sonic Society, now complete with working feed! That's right folks its a full serve podcast with no waiting! If you're listening to this show on Tuesday night, there's a good chance then that the feed is well and truly back to itself. We had a bit of a problem last week, with the feed, but we thank Libsyn for the fix. By all means if you want some specifics about the problems we had check out Audiodramatalk.com or the Sonic Society Facebook group, but for now we're just glad we're back. A couple of quick notes... We've received all the instrumentals for Shannon's Torch Album... so expect the tunes to be coming your way soon! I'm giving our girl no more than two weeks to prepare. Count down folks! Secondly, the Sonic Society Audio Awards for 2007-2008 year are closed. Judges are tabulating the result! You can expect that Awards to happen at the end of the month! Thirdly, we just want to thank everyone for the kind words said about episode #1 of Gate and a special thanks to all the actors who have worked solidly this month. Seriously folk... we've done nearly a month of two episodes a week. That's a lot of prep work for actors to go through, get in the moment and perform. And finally we can officially say everything is a GO as we signed a deal with Farpoint Media and Shannon and I to host "The Library of Jack and Shannon" which will be a fiction podcast due out any time now. We're just getting ready for our feed.. and our theme music. We actually have been looking into the podsafe music network to obtain a feed and give poor Sharon Bee a break, but for some reason, the preview of songs aren't working for us lately.. is that just us, or is there something going on with the Podsafe Music Network itself? Let us know... And speaking of let us know.. We've got some feed back on the Zug Beud line... First off, its Society faithful, Matt Leong. Before we get going, we just want to express our hopes and prayers to Matt and his wife. I don't think we're betraying any confidences when we say that there's a health issue going on in the family right now, and we'd like everyone in the Sonic Society to go over to the DoubledorkMeter podcast (URL in the show nores) and give Matt and Emily your good wishes for a steady recovery. Matt has been a long time listener, has an amazing podcast, is a phenomenal artist, and has entertained many of us here at the Society for a long time now, and it's really time to give back a little and let him know you care. Just to show you how above and beyond Matt is.. in this past week, while we were having our woes with the feed, Matt offered AND posted the latest show up on the Doubledork Meter. Thanks Matt... on with your zug call. 3. Vamp Questions Matt: Are you a Frog Brother or are you a Scoobie? Thanks for finding the geekiest reference in episode 1, Matt! Derek: 1. What's our top three? 2. Time Enough- Poutine. Shannon loves or hates? Poutine is pretty much everywhere in Eastern Canada now. 3. Question the Third. Jack's Pirate Show. Pirate resources. Thanks so much Derek! How did you find us? We're always interested! Here's the most recent books I'm reading on the subject: A History of Pirates Pirates and Outlaws of Canada Pirate Hunter- The True Story of Captain Kidd Pirates- An Illustrated History I'm also playing Pirates of the Caribbean Online and Pirate Hunter simply for flavour. I recognize the inaccuracies of it all. Alexa Chipman has me worried... She's a naval historian, and I hate getting things wrong! Speaking of Alexa... Miss Chipman has also graced us with a message from good ol' Zug. Alexa: If you could go to any period of history... what would it be and why? Well, this is one of my favourite little intellectual exercises. Here are my questions involved. 1. Are we going to visit or live there permanently? 2. Can we speak the language or not? 3. Would we be able to interact wi

Errata #1 (Wed, 20 Jun 2007)
This is the first errata report.
Sorry Sonic Society Members.
If you downloaded Sonic in the Summertime #4 as soon as it hit the podwaves, you may have received a truncated file that was missing The Batman Imperium episode.

This would have struck you strange as the lovely and talented Shannon introduces the show, but then it does not appear and we end up the episode.

Much apologies... Just imagine this little feed as the test screen that used to come up on your television set saying, "We're experience technical difficulties"

The fact that this is the first time we've had to do this, is a good thing... right?

Thanks so much for your patience. And resync your listening devices now and you'll get the full episode.

See you in two weeks.
All the Best,
Jack

Sonic Society: Season All Good Seasons (Wed, 26 Apr 2006)

Episode #33
Aired: 4/18/06

Our regular broadcast through our radio affiliates this week has ended with Archibald MacLeigh's "The Fall of the City" a triumphant distopic view of a society in distress. Because of various contract requirements, we're unable to present this show for our podcasting audience. If you wish to listen to the Fall of the City, please tune in to one of our affiliate stations or download the archives from the CKDU website.
In its place I'd like to present a special show available only through our podcast- Texas Radio Theater's "The Snowman". A Hans Christian Anderson tale adapted by our member in good standing Richard Frolich.

This is our final meeting of this season's Sonic Society, and there's so much to be done. I want to thank all of our contributors and urge any of our more quiet members to send us your works or your thoughts for season 2.
Afterwards, a chat with next season's host Andrew Dorfman, and Audio Addict Dani Cutler, as they reminisce over the first season and give some hints as to what will be in store for Society Members next season. We then conclude this very successful first season with part 1 of Shadowlands Theatre's "Ghosts of the Present".

**Please go to the shownotes page for a link to Part 2 of "Ghosts of the Present! (this link will take you to the original episode that you can download and hear the exciting conclusion! Yes the show notes will match, but the media file is different. )**

Sonic Society: Final Descent (Tue, 11 Apr 2006)
Episode 32: Aired 4/11/06

This week's meeting completes our voyage into Hell. Not some travelogue by Dante but rather a ghoulish vision of the Abyss on Earth. A play on words like "Aftermath" in which the authors of Ollin Productions look at how humanity would fair with Hell superimposed upon it. This idea, the brainchild of Joseph Medina works on many levels, not the least of which is mythic/psychological. As I've mentioned on previous episodes, I find when you explore religious icons and myths in tales you provide an excellent opportunity to look at the human condition. Maybe it's because myths deal with such stark archetypes it's easier to explore the human heart, truth, belief, love, good and evil. I think the use of anthology stories, while incredibly popular in past radio dramas has been underutilized today. Now, I love a good continuous story where we can get to know and explore characters, but it's in the anthology format that I find we can especially focus on themes and concepts. We continue with "Dark Descent", then finish our interview with the "After Hell" crew.

We close out this meeting with a very special treat from Shadowlands Theatre. A sobering lesson on the consequences of greed is taught to the crew of a cargo holder soon to be lost in what appears to be deep space. From the Deadly Sins Scripts we present to you part 1 of "Greed: Ghosts of the Present".

Sonic Society: Descent Into Hell Pt.1 (Wed, 05 Apr 2006)
Episode 31 Aired: 4/4/06

The Sonic Society

The series "AfterHell" arrived in my mail and once again I feel like a kid waking up on Christmas morning- or perhaps in this case Hallowe'en Morn. The episode "Dark Descent" has everything in it I love about good audio cinema. A strong narrative, powerful actors, great music, and attention to one of the most important details- an understanding of the medium. I've spoken before about the brilliance of the very first known radio drama that explored the millieu through a tale of miners sealed off in the darkness. To tell a really good radio drama, you can't simply do a movie without pictures. The best audio stories use sound as a plot device. When you're left in darkness in a mining shaft, sound is your world. When you spend most of your time on the telephone trying to elicit help, sound is your savior- or your damnation.
The folks at Ollin Productions recognise this and use sound to drive their story forward.
After our feature we'll have an interview with the good folks from Ollin Productions about the After Hell project, then finish up with a final set of Wasted Tape.

  • In this week's late St. Patty's Day feature, two American tousirsts become lost in Western Ireland and stop to ask directions of a local shepherd. A hilarious exchange ensues, as each tries to slog through the hidden cultural assumptions of the other- helped along by the comments of several local sheep. Fresh from our mailbag, this addition to the first season of the Sonic Society comes from our friend and member in good standing Kerric Harvey with her play, "Driving in Ireland."

After, we travel to Prescott, Arizona and hear a sketch from Coyote Radio Theater, followed by the realending of the interview with Sam Mowry of Willamette Radio, and finishing up this meeting with some more Wasted Tape.

  • Have you noticed that recently Westerns are making a bit of a comeback? I'm not speaking directly about the most recent Oscar buzz of "Brokeback Mountain", but rather the successes of shows like Colonial Radio Theatre's "Powder River" which is getting rave reviews and thunderous applause from all quarters. XM Satellite radio can't seem to get enough Powder River, and Jerry Robbins is now working on season three of the hit series. On televsion, even science fiction takes a turn moseying along with the "wagon trains of the stars". Gene Roddenberry claimed to sell Star Trek in the 60's with that phrase, and Joss Whedon's pre-empted triumph "Firefly" along with its followup movie "Serenity" leans heavily on that age of old west. While I'm well aware that genres weave in and out of popularity, I'm more interested in why cycles occur rather than suggesting that they somehow have a regular pattern- if they did, wouldn't it have been time for a big 30's pulp movie like Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow? How long has it been since we've had a new renaissance in that genre?

I think there's something about the world we live in today, and the values that the Old West represented- simplicity, even a clearer sense of what's right and what's wrong. In today's complex society, there's a real yearning for a tangible way to make a better life.

Later we'll finish our interview with Schlock Audio's Bruce Humphries, and end this meeting with a little... Wasted Tape.

  • There are a few genres that work especially well in radio drama- comedy of course is the most popular. Fantasy and Science Fiction are also exciting options because audio cinema really has no limits. It's as easy to identify an alien planet through sound as it is to have your story earthbound. Suspense and horror are some of my favourites as well because the things that scare us and fascinate us are always best left to the imagination. Willamette Radio Workshop produces a number of audio gems that understand the best ways to use radio drama. This week's presentation "Next Year's Girl" offers us a broadstroked look at a gothic fairy tale. The story of "Beauty and the Beast" can titilate the imagination as we ask primal questions... about ourselves, our place in society, our capacity to be loved and to love, and in the case of this week's feature what we're willing to sacrifice.

We'll talk to Sam Mowry from Willamette about his projects and his passion for audio cinema, and finish off this week with a special extended-version of DRE's Robotz of the Company and the Bot War.

  • One of the great elements of the Schlock Audio re-mastered masterpieces, is that so many of the "goofs" from the movies can be discarded from distraction or added by the narrator as schlocky flavour. Of all the favoured filmmakers in Schlock audio drama, its hard to find a Director more hallowed than Ed Wood. Ed's amazing "one shot" direction. His economical sets and scripts, and his ineffable humour permeates all his works. It's hard to imagine that Bride of the Monster is considered one of the top 100 worst movies. Compared to Plan 9 it's nearly a masterpiece on celluloid.

In my regular quest to find more audio cinema out in the ethers of the Internet I ran across an immaculately designed webpage from the folks at Dry Smoke and Whispers. Listening to a portion of their show "The ShadowMan" I knew I wanted to include these stories into the Society. Marc Rose gratiously sent me the first episode as a download an followed up with three gorgeous looking CD box sets. In the insert in episode one Marc writes "It all started with David Bowie. We wanted to write a character for Dry Smoke that would suit his character: his mystery, his ambiguity." With that kind of inspiration we can certainly expect a unique story to be told.

  • I would like to thank those many people who have written in to give us their thoughts and ideas for the continual improvement of our show. From the very beginnings Andrew Dorfman and I have conceived of the Sonic Society as a collective effort. It is a partnership beginning with those who kindly offer us their works, and ending with you our listening members. We believe very deeply in audio drama's cause and look forward to bringing you more and more of your favourites while presenting new shows you might not have heard before. So please if you haven't dropped us a line, email us at sonicsociety@gmail.com to give us your thoughts on how we can improve.

The idea for this story came from a simple walk to the local Corner Store. There I met a middle-aged woman buying a pack of smokes. Not exactly an unusual sight. Now I don't smoke, and I don't really understand the habit, but neither is it for me to judge. I did note however there was a huge picture of a diseased lung and warning labels all over the package as is the law in Canada. Basically, it struck me, this woman was paying with full knowledge that this was going to kill her. Maybe that's true, maybe it isn't.
The fact is, it seemed a little absurd and I mumbled out loud yet entirely to myself, "It wouldn't matter if they attached electrodes to those... would it?"
The woman heard me (which startled me to no end) and grinned saying as she opened the pack, "Not a bit."

    There's a story in that, I was certain. I hope you'll agree.

Sit back and relax as we present for the first time ever, an old Shadowlands Theatre story, "Spin, Spin, Spin". Followed by episode #4 of Biff Straker and Spaceways.

In our previous incarnation as "Shadowlands Theatre" one of my very favourite forays into the past was listening to the old time radio drama series "Sherlock Holmes" with Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. Rathbone was arguably the best Holmes capturing some of the quirky spirit of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's creation. It was only after Jeremy Brett's turn on the BBC production that people considered there was a new great Sleuth with the Deerstalker.
This tale adapted by Jim Cort was presented to us by our friend and member of the Society "Richard Frolich".

Audio Drama has its favourites and if you talk to many aficionados of the art they will tell you that there's more science fiction and comedy in the new Audio works than any other genre. Schlock Audio Theater's works are some of the very best of the unintended intended comedy you'll find. Bruce Humphries and Charles E. Pratt have a love for the old- and so bad they are good "B-flick" horrors of the past. What they have discovered is that the 50's horrors have great new life as radio dramas, especially with their own narrator/host. Tonight we present another of our favourite gut wrenching tales "House of Wax".

Returning to the Society another great fan favourite- The Red Panda. The Red Panda's new adventures can be heard regularly through Podcast at the Radio Memories Network or through Decoder Ring Theatre's website. I love the Red Panda because Gregg Taylor's humour and alacrity knows exactly how much cheese we want on our meal, and how much meat. Too many turns at the heroic wheel have produced silly stories or super serious ones. The original Red Panda series has just the right mixture. In his new series, Mr. Taylor takes the Red Panda and produces an instant golden age classic to be found in the honoured halls of other greats like The Shadow and The Green Hornet. Canada's premiere super-hero of the past, has many more adventures waiting for him in the future.

  • The Sonic Society
  • This week our Society meeting looks at Texas Radio Theatre. Our good friend and Society member in good stead Richard Frolick has been writing and creating radio drama for many years now. One of his favourite productions is yet another famous Jack- and that being a hardnosed or rather hardcastled detective.

Jack Hardcastle is a delightful romp in the style that Texas Radio Theatre has become best known for- loving tributes with a wink to the past and an eye to the future. Winners of the Ogle Awards and mentioned honourably by the Mark Time awards for their productions, Texas Radio Theatre produces live performances nearly as often as it works in the studio. Tireless, Mr. Frolick and his theatre players provide a wide variety of fantasy, comedy, drama and suspense in their lineup.

Sonic Society- Soul Patrolin' (Fri, 20 Jan 2006)
    Episode 19- Aired 1/10/06

  • The Sonic Society
  • This week in the Society we return to a fan favourite, "The Soul Patrol" by David Koenigsberg. Our heroes of the Soul Patrol investigate the kinds of terrible crimes only humans could commit upon each other. They explore the psyche's of villains that most likely go undetected by mere mortal law enforcement, and that brings some interesting questions to mind.

There's some long abiding principles that have run out of favour in our society today. The idea of "sinning in thought" is not considered nearly as important compared to sinning in deed. In the past, even horrendous villainous thoughts had far reaching consequences- in the Soul Patrol they are footprints of crimes to be committed- as much as eyes are the windows to the soul. Writing celestial characters can have real power in stories. They give us the opportunity to look at metaphors and archetypes to shine the lamp of truth upon who we are and where we're going. Stand by as we go soaring off into another Soul Patrol adventure.

After, an interview with Jonithan Patrick Russell of Dream Realm Enterprises.

    Episode 18- Aired 1/03/06

  • The idea in most science fiction is that it's not science fiction. That is to say, the stories may be set in the near or distant future, but they are about us as people today. Even if the people are future people, their sentiments, their concerns, their lives reflect our sentiments, our concerns, and our lives. Whether the characters are aliens or robots, they represent humanity and all our foibles and hopes.

Great Northern Audio's "Martian Trombones" takes a page from the classic view of martians as folks just like us. While we recognise this may be entirely flights of fantasy and humour, it is also important to see that no matter what planet you're from, the same issues remain.

After, an interview with Dr. Kerric Harvey on writing and creating radio drama.

  • This week we return once again to the next exciting installment of the Arbiter Chronicles from Prometheus Theater. One of the enduring ideas of space that has been explored so readily in television shows like Star Trek, Firefly, Space Above and Beyond, and Babylon 5 among others is the concept of isolation. Like great adventurers of the past, heroes in space will not have the opportunity to turn to the powerful resources of a city, country, or empire to solve problems that arise. This leaves room for the ingenious, the clever, and the wiley. Surviving in space requires a quick understanding of a situation when it arises and the best solution with the least amount of depleted resources in the task. The best Captains in space are those who inspire courage in their fellows and answers to the most complex solutions. Whether they are Kirk, Adama, Reynolds or Atal.

  • Music has a powerful draw in all our lives, and its importance seems to grow as the years pass. We purchase CD's of the music of movies as readily as the DVD's of the movies themselves. No less is the importance of music in radio drama. While there have been very successful series that have not utilized music, for the most part, modern radio drama depends upon it to cover the skeletal structure of an audio performance and make each contour seamless... beautiful. In this week's feature, music is very much the magic that enchants and beguiles the characters in our story. Texas Radio Theatre's live show of "Dragon Song" begins in a moment.

Also included in our meeting this week is an interview with Richard Frohlich architect and creator of The Texas Radio Theatre group, another shout out for all those interested in writing your own audio cinema scripts, and we begin to wrap up our run of Robots of the Company by DreamRealm Enterprises.

Sonic Society: Down the Dark Passage (Mon, 28 Nov 2005)

    Episode #13
    Aired: 11/29/2005

We may walk roads of darkness as well as light, but we spend most of our time drifting in shadow. Crazy Dog Audio Theatre has a proven track record of high-end sonic soundscapes, and this week on the Society we are pleased to present one of our favourites, "Gerry in the Dark Passage."

The Dark Passage in this story is a video game, but it could easily be many other escapes that modern life affords. As we sit in our consumer-driven lifestyles most of our relationships are moderated around products. Stylized video games and songs, downloadable movies, and "cool" political rants- but do they really change the world, or even the way we think?

Has humanity become as disposable as the products we've come to rely on?

One thing is certain, each week we present audio gems that are from a rejuvinating art form, and here in the Society we love to create. Stand by in the intermission as we talk about the Consortium Comics project here in the Society, and later an interview with Roger Gregg from Crazy Dog.

Schlock Radio Theatre excels in taking classic B horrors from the screen and re-imagining them for the mind. Taking motion pictures and making audio cinema is nothing new, but the innovative method of rendering what is normally a visual stunt (and usually cheap looking) in a narrative comedic form is a brilliant way to give new life to old reels.

    Episode 3 Aired: 9/20/2005

From the Emerald Isle this tale brought to us by Kerric Harvey, professor and author, explores some of the lesser known yet nevertheless pivotal characters from the past. It is well known that history is written by the victors, however even the victors contain their own prejudices and preferences when it comes to chronicling what was.
Witness how familiar the name Brian Boru is compared to that of Gormlaith. Brian has long been considered the last great high king to unite all of Ireland fighting back the Viking usurpers in the late 10th and early 11th centuries. So then who is this Gormlaith who held such political sway that she had either married, bed, or bore most of the great men and heroes of that age? What kind of power did she wield? And who would want to diminish her role in history- this enigmatic and ambitious woman of quality?
But let us let Professor Harvey explain this mystery in her own radio drama entitled- "Gormlaith- Princess of Ireland." Sonic Society: Premiere Episode (Tue, 06 Sep 2005)

    Episode #1 Aired: 9/06/2005

This week we kick off the festivities with a little soul searching. Are we alone? Or does God have control over everything? Shall we leave it in his hands, or take actions ourselves. In my own writings I've often considered exactly what part the celestial plays in the affairs of humanity. David Koenigsberg's continuing series "The Soul Patrol" answers that question in a mixture of rye humour and dramatic tension. Later we'll have a conversation with Mr. Koenigsberg about creating radio drama, and begin our weekly serial from DreamRealm Enterprises- Robots of the Company.
