Letters: Letter: Montreal Fireworks (Tue, 12 Aug 2008)
To the Editor: Your “Readers’ Picks: Montreal” (Aug. 10) offered excellent suggestions, especially the walk from McGill College to the Old Port via Rue St.-Denis. But to refer to La Ronde’s “weekly fireworks” in your photo caption is like referring to the Pacific Ocean as “water.” La Ronde hosts the annual International Fireworks Competition on Wednesday and Saturday nights every summer. Two years ago, on a solo getaway to Montreal, I attended the Wednesday night entry from Portugal and the Saturday night performance by Canada. Both shows were staggering; each were 30 minutes long with over 5,000 components fired off, all tightly synchronized to custom music beds. This year, I brought my adult son and daughter along for the United States (Wednesday) and China (Saturday) entries; seven other countries competed this year.. Two minutes into the United Statesperformance, my son turned to me and said, “Dad, I’ve just seen more fireworks than I’ve ever seen in my entire life.” He’s 24. The United States ended up winning the gold, and the Chinese the bronze. The Web site for the International Fireworks Competition is www.internationaldesfeuxloto-quebec.com.
