Nope, if the sites were identical they would have the same pagerank..
Therefore the entire premise is faulty.. PR is a small part of the overall picture.. Focusing on it is mental masturbation and a waste of time.. Seriously..
If the PR3 website got a link from CNN then it will usually outrank the PR5 site simply because of the trust imparted by a site like CNN.. At the very least it will get a ton more traffic..

Hi Kay, the reason pagerank is important is because the site is free to use and therefore the only way we can make money is through adverts. I thought the general consensus was that if there were 2 identical sites one with PR3 and the other PR5 then the PR5 site would get the business?
I'd never linked keywords with Page Rank but there must be so many things I am doing wrong and was after a little guidance...

are you under the common illusion that ranking for keywords is dependant on pagerank? it isnt, just so ya know

cheers for your comment too Jon, that actually did clear things up.
Anyone else with pearls of wisdom on how we can imporove page rank that would be great - last week we dropped from 4 to 3 and we'd been expecting to go the other way so I'm a little disillusioned.

Any outbound link affects PR unless no follow is used.
You are passing PR from two pages yes, but I wouldnt worry to much about this. You could have a link on 10 PR1 pages and the link back could be from a PR7 page so it is likley you would be getting the best deal in this theoretical situation.

Yup, targetted landing pages for each keyword group (honda, nissan etc etc)
