| Prior to the release of Oracle Database Server 10g, database administrators had to choose between raw logical volumes or filesystems to house their data files. The decision to implement one or the other was always a compromise, as raw logical volumes offer the best performance, but filesystems are easier to administer. The choice of filesystems offers many features for the dba. Since the unit of storage allocation is a filesystem, and the filesystem is owned by the Oracle user, the DBA can allocate additional data files as needed. Oracle's autoextend feature can also be used to increase the space allocation for data files when necessary, and free space can be easily seen at the system level to be used with capacity planning tools. |

| For Oracle Database environments, ongoing performance monitoring and tuning activities are essential to getting the most of your systems investment. In order to be most effective, monitoring and tuning must be performed at multiple levels of the solution stack. This includes the hardware, Operating System, Database and Application levels. This paper discusses two commonly available performance monitoring tools - Oracle Statspack and IBM NMON - and how they can be used to monitor and analyze possible performance issues for Oracle Database applications running in an AIX/System p server environment. In Oracle10g environments, Automatic Workload Repository (AWR) reports can be used in place of Statspack. A number of real-world examples of Statspack and NMON data are provided. |

| The User Interface Design and Performance Analysis department, in the Analytical Solutions Division at SAS, requested an IBM AIX system for the purpose of setting up a large data mart to test the performance of Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) flows. The SAS R&D Data Center provided an IBM pSeries p650 system running the IBM AIX 5L Version 5.3 operating system with a host name of "lemans." The pSeries technical consultant onsite at SAS assisted with the setup and tuning of lemans. The results obtained are documented in this paper. |

| Many applications running on AIX are mirroring their data using the Logical Volumes Manager (LVM). Purpose of the mirror is to provide redundancy in order to continue with operation in case of a failure in the storage environment. The mirrors are usually allocated in physically different storage subsystems, to ensure that the application will continue when one storage subsystem fails. The LVM will recognize the failure of the mirror. Receiving write request will be applied to the remaining mirror. At the same time the LVM marks the changed physical partitions for the failing mirror as 'Stale'. This ensures that the mirror can be resynchronized when the failing storage subsystem will be available again. |
