Accepting Change (Tue, 13 May 2008)
In the dark, Oscar-nominated film "The Savages," Wendy Savage cries out, "We're horrible, horrible people," as she and her older brother, Jon, consider to which of Buffalo's dreary nursing homes to commit their octogenarian father.

The Right Time to Make a Move (Tue, 13 May 2008)
Sometimes timing is everything. The decision my husband, Phil, and I made last year -- to sell our high-rise condo in a friendly and lively area of North Bethesda and move to a retirement community -- was one of those instances.

Achieving Balance (Tue, 17 Apr 2007)
Hey, you over there. Yes, you, 30-something, practicing run-ups. And you, 40-something, working on arm strength. And even you, sweet 16, on the soccer field. I have a question for all of you: Are you doing any balance exercises?

Fitness in a Time of Mold and Pollen (Tue, 10 Apr 2007)
Okay, so you're buying tissues in bulk these days. You're coughing and sneezing, cursing the pollen count and -- maybe worst of all, if you're a committed jogger like me -- having your usual hour's run come to a wheezing halt after 20 minutes.

Deserving a Better Spin (Tue, 03 Apr 2007)
So you've seen the dark room full of Under Armour-clad bodies pedaling furiously, channeling Lance Armstrong while they cycle to techno-infused music. Or caught a whiff when they exited class, looking as if they had jumped into a pool with their clothes on. And you've thought: No way am I getting within a five-foot radius of indoor cycling class.

Metro's Escalated Challenge (Tue, 27 Mar 2007)
Most people view Metro's escalators as a way to get from Point A to Point B. I view them as a personal challenge.

Don't Just Get on the Ball. Do It Right. (Tue, 20 Mar 2007)
"Over there, look," trainer Juilieanna McGuire says, pointing discreetly toward a young woman stretching her back over a large rubber exercise ball. "I used to try to correct them, but now it would be a full-time job."

Search for the Perfect Running Shoe: A Cautionary Tale (Tue, 06 Mar 2007)
Like the famed ivory-billed woodpecker, my perfect running shoe is hiding. I have been as methodical and patient as those champion bird-watchers in my search. All I have to show for it is the orthopedic version of a fuzzy photograph. Flashes of greatness have flown from my feet in some shoes. But only for brief moments, and maybe they weren't even real.

A Step-by-Step Executive Workout (Tue, 27 Feb 2007)
Even the most health-conscious corporate executive sometimes struggles to balance professional and social commitments with a regular exercise regimen. The bottom line is this: The healthier you are, the more productive you will be; the fitter you become, the fewer work days you will miss, the less susceptible to stress you will be, and the better you will sleep.

Honorable Mentions: The Supporting Cast (Fri, 23 Feb 2007)
The only part of "Truly Madly Deeply" that I don't like is letting go of Alan Rickman! He helps Nina get over him, but not me! When Nina places Jamie's cello in its case for the last time, I can hardly bear the finality of it. But the film grabbed me from the first shot of the Underground, the lighting, the North London milieu, Bill Paterson, the perfect music choices, but mostly the luminescent brilliance of Juliet Stevenson. Obviously, the scene where she weeps with such anguish and anger is the best on-screen crying in the history of movies.

Pick It Up, Sister (Tue, 06 Feb 2007)
My sister's wedding is six months away. Like most brides, she wants to be in top shape when she says "I do." But like any budget-strapped young professional, she doesn't want to pay to get there. No $100-a-month gym membership. No $50-an-hour personal training sessions. In the grand scheme of wedding expenditures, we decided, this part would be free.

An Injury Teaches Mental Flexibility (Tue, 30 Jan 2007)

To Get Anywhere, First Pick a Destination (Tue, 23 Jan 2007)
When it comes to exercise, how do you measure success (or even progress)? Some people are so gung-ho about getting fit (yesterday!) that they do too much too soon, burn out and throw in their sweaty towels. Others get hopelessly lost in the details, wondering whether to be most concerned about the duration, distance or intensity of their workouts. Still others play a numbers game as they try to hit a personal best during each tryst with the treadmill or elliptical trainer.

Fitness on Demand -- With a Little Help From DVDs (Tue, 09 Jan 2007)

Go Slowly Now . . . So You Don't Slump Later (Tue, 02 Jan 2007)
Even though I learned in my first journalism job to "never assume anything," the personal trainer in me makes me pretty confident in assuming -- this being early January -- that you've resolved to improve your fitness this year. Maybe you got some new gear; joined a gym or dusted off your old membership; set your sights on a race or some other goal. In any case, you're ready to start.

A Build-It-Yourself Gym (Tue, 12 Dec 2006)
I am a fitness equipment nut. But my husband has learned not to let me near sporting goods stores, and I know better than to let late-night TV purchases drain my wallet and clutter my closets . . . anymore. Instead, to maintain my habit and my marriage, I've conned Hubby into thinking that we're bonding over building projects when really I'm just using him to get gym equipment on the cheap. Hence, my homemade "crafty" gym.

Whatever Rows Your Boat (Tue, 05 Dec 2006)
"A youthful mind in a youthful body." It's a slight spin on an old saw -- and it's what keeps Alexandria dancer and choreographer Jayne Letsche on her toes at 85, just as it brings oarsman Bill Cox out onto the Potomac, skimming through the early-morning mist at age 63. They are living proof of what the research tells us: that no matter what your age is, physical activity fosters feelings of well-being. For active men and women like Cox and Letsche, being old is a state of mind -- and one they are not ready to adopt.

For Yoga Devotees: The Laptop Pose (Tue, 21 Nov 2006)
So it seems America has a burgeoning Internet addiction. Really: I read it online. Okay, we all know folks who log too many Web hours running background checks on their parents and uploading videos of their goldfish to YouTube, but there's still some gold in them thar pixels.

Portable Trainer: An MP3 Workout (Tue, 14 Nov 2006)
How many of your workouts go something like this: Stride purposefully into gym whistling favorite tune, hum through 10 minutes of cardio warm-up, bang out a set of chest presses, then, let's see, maybe some leg extensions, then, hmm, maybe bicep curls? Next, where were we? After 15 minutes you've lost a little steam and a lot of focus, and you're not at all sure you're getting the full benefit of your gym time.

Excuse Me, but Having Kids Is No Excuse (Tue, 07 Nov 2006)
One thing we often hear from parents is that they lack the time to exercise. I find this curious: As a youth, I gave my parents hourly opportunities for exercise -- diving to catch falling lamps, for example, hoisting the bureau off my little sister and yanking me from the jaws of one self-inflicted disaster after another.

Pajama Games: Working Out Without Going Out (Tue, 31 Oct 2006)
Of all the questions we get, we especially like those that reveal your fashion sense. During last week's online chat, one participant sought counsel on a short, non-jolting workout she could do in the morning that does not "require me to put shoes on, change out of my pajamas, or leave my living room."

A Core Workout -- or Just Horsing Around? (Tue, 10 Oct 2006)
We see horseback riding as a leisure -- not fitness -- activity. So when we heard about an electronic equine by the name of Joba, purported to boost core strength via regular "riding," we thought the claims must be a load of, well, equine output. But obligated to patrol the barbed wire of the fitness frontier for you, our valued exercise pardners, we saddled up for a test ride.

Rockin' With the IT Band (Tue, 03 Oct 2006)
Usually the phrase "irritated band" evokes images of gruff British rockers demanding more Ketel One backstage. For us (until our guitar skills improve), it refers to the iliotibial, or IT, band, a rope of fibrous tissue that extends from hip to knee, along the outside of the thigh. It can become cranky in us amateur fitness folk due to overuse or poor exercise form. The injury is most common in runners but also afflicts cyclists, swimmers, hikers and others who engage in repetitive, moderate-to-intense knee-flexing activities.

Pumping Without the Iron (Tue, 26 Sep 2006)
We say often that you don't need big clanky weights to gain strength, that so-called bodyweight exercises -- push-ups, pull-ups and others that require you to move the weight of your body against the pull of gravity -- will suffice. We then typically waltz off and leave you ear-deep in dust bunnies on the floor, trying to recall your last push-up. So let's elaborate.

Working It Out at Work (Tue, 19 Sep 2006)

Putting the Cardio Before the Horse (Tue, 12 Sep 2006)
If we had a nickel for every time someone asked us whether it's okay to do cardio and strength training on the same day -- and if so, in what order -- we'd have at least a quarter, a significant value in a land rife with parking meters. So we'll do our best to address those queries, ideally before the meter maid circles back.

Running Afoul of the Law (Tue, 22 Aug 2006)
Despite the Moving Crew's intimate familiarity with traffic court, our formal legal education is pretty much limited to laws of physics ("a body in motion tends to stay in motion," etc.) and, if we finish our homework in time, watching "Law and Order: Fitness Crime Scene" on cable.

Even Bruno Believes in Holidays (Tue, 15 Aug 2006)
Oh ye who nervously peel open the Health section, fearing the wrath of Bruno the Megatrainer, today we bear a gentle message: Exercisers who favor moderate to high intensities should take one day of rest per week to allow the body to rejuvenate and consolidate the gains of exercise.

The Back Story, Revisited (Tue, 08 Aug 2006)
Have low-back pain? Ever had it? Want to avoid it? Okay, that covers all of us, so listen up: The muscles of the lower back are designed more for stability and less for power or acceleration (unlike, say, the quadriceps). Thus, you want to choose back exercises that promote endurance, not brute strength.

The Stuff of Fitness (Tue, 01 Aug 2006)
Like any community, the fitness village works best when everybody shares. So we were pleased that many of you responded to last week's column about some of the more curious new products at a fitness trade show with your own reports about the stuff that makes your workouts more fun, effective or bearable. Your input is especially illuminating since here at Crew HQ we tend to use whatever is lying around -- paperweights, traffic cones, congresspersons in recess -- to get our exercise.

Fitness's State-of-the-Mart (Tue, 25 Jul 2006)
A dumbbell is a dumbbell, a treadmill a treadmill and an exercise band . . . well, that's just a glorified piece of rubber tubing, right? Actually, yes, but don't share this insight with the makers of fitness gear. They would be so sad, considering the time, money and effort they expend blitzing the market with new versions of familiar accouterments.
